Why I do not sell nutritional supplements.
By: John King
If you have ever been to a naturopath or other holistically oriented practitioner, you’ve probably already experienced what I am about to describe.
You’ve just finished your consultation and wrote your holistic practitioner a check for their services. Your practitioner then leads you over to their “natural pharmacy” and proceeds to dispense all the products/supplements they have recommended for you. The price tag is astronomical! As you walk out the door you are wondering what you just spent your hard earned money on. Will they work? Do I even need them?
Years ago before I became a Holistic Health Consultant, the same thing happened to me. I had some health concerns and was seeking a more natural approach. At that time Dr. Atkins was all the rage and had some very forward thinking ideas. So I made an appointment with the Atkins Center to see “The Dr. Atkins”. I was psyched!
After a very lengthy visit with many practitioners at the Atkins Center, I finally got to see Dr. Akins. A large part of my visit with him was devoted to discussing nutritional supplementation. At the end of my visit I was escorted to “the pharmacy” to pick up the things Dr. Atkins recommended. They handed me a small shopping bag with fifteen or so bottles in it. My jaw nearly hit the floor as the bill was almost $1,000! Dr. Atkins had me convinced that I needed all these things and so I felt like I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t get them. So I did, leaving the office $1000 poorer. Later research showed that I could have gotten equivalent supplements for less than half the price. Needless to say I felt a little taken advantage of. This got me to thinking. How do you know if you really need a supplement or medication if the same person who recommends it, also sells it to you? The answer is, you don’t. I’m not saying that all practitioners are dishonest and sell their clients things they don’t need. But this was only one of many experiences I’ve had of this nature. Once a medical doctor, who considered himself to be holistically oriented, tried to enroll me in a multi-level marketing scheme to make more money for himself. I found this behavior to be highly unethical.
When I went into practice for myself, these lessons stuck with me. I decided that I did not want to be like some of the practitioners I had seen, padding their wallets with my health misfortunes. This is why I do not sell nutritional supplements to my clients. Thus, when I recommend a product or supplement, you can be sure it’s because I feel you need it. I have no vested interest in unloading high priced products on my clients. I have no brand loyalty and so I am free to recommend the best supplement for YOU! But I even take this one step further. Over time I have sourced out the best and most economical supplements and where to obtain them. I pass this information along to my clients as part of my service. My clients are always free to purchase supplements I recommend anywhere they like. Many of my clients are chronically ill and have many health related expenses. By following my recommendations they are able to cut the cost of their supplementation by 50% or more. What was cost prohibitive is now affordable. After all, getting healthy should be for everyone, not just the wealthy.
Just about everyday a new “miracle pill” comes on the market making outrageous claims. Take weight loss for example. How many different weight loss products do you see on the shelves of your local health food store? It boggles the mind. Do they work? Some do, for some people. One thing you can be sure of though, your wallet will be considerably lighter when you leave the store! The truth is many of these products are the same old thing repackaged with a bigger and brighter bow. Don’t fall victim to all the hype.
With over 20 years of experience as a Holistic Health Consultant, I can help guide you through the maze of wild claims and false hopes. The truth is, there is no one supplement that is perfect for everyone. We all have our own biochemical individuality that needs to be considered when using nutritional supplements. Take advantage of my passion for health and make it your advantage. Call or email me to setup your free 30 minute wellness consultation and find how how I can help you with your health concerns.
