How To Make Your
Own Hand Sanitizer
By: John King
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic medical supplies are in short supply. Trying to find items like masks, gloves and hand sanitizer is next to impossible. When you can find these items they are all over priced, partially due to supply and demand, but primarily due to greedy sellers trying to capitalize on a bad situation. So when it comes to hand sanitizer what are we to do? The answer: Let the greedy sellers keep their hand sanitizer and make your own!
The following is a simple recipe for making your own hand sanitizer with no chemicals or harmful ingredients. You can scale the recipe up or down to suit your needs and it only takes about 10 minutes to make.
To make your own hand sanitizer you will need the following:
▪ A blender or large mixing bowl and a hand mixer
▪ Pump or squeeze bottles for the finished product
▪ 90% (minimum) Isopropyl Alcohol or Everclear (from liquor store)
▪ Aloe Vera Gel
▪ Tea Tree Oil
Procedure:
In a blender or mixing bowl combine one part Aloe Vera Gel with three parts isopropyl alcohol or Everclear. Add 10-20 drops of Tea Tree Oil per every 8 ounces of finished product. (Tea Tree Oil has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.) Blend or mix thoroughly and promptly transfer into your dispensing bottles. That’s it, you’re done! Not only easy, but this recipe will save you big bucks over trying to buy hand sanitizer in the current climate.
Notes:
▪ I prefer using a blender to mix the formula as produces a smoother mixture.
▪ Everclear is 95% alcohol compared to Isopropyl Alcohol which is only 90% at best. I prefer to use Everclear as it will produce a stronger product.
▪ Tea Tree Oil is important because of it’s antimicrobial properties.
Use hand sanitizer after touching any surface that has not been sanitized. Don’t forget to periodically wipe down the steering wheel, shifter and door handles of your car. Cell phones should be wiped with alcohol at least once per day. As always, practice social distancing and wear some type of mask when in public.
Stay safe out there, your health is everything!
Best in Health,
John
